Rumors have been going around of Sony working on a new version of Play Station Portable that counters the new gaming dimensions brought in by the iPhone and Nintendo Wii as well as the arch rival of PSP, the Nintendo DS. There have been many fake images and mock ups but the company has been keeping quite or denying the rumors until now, especially with regard to PSP 4000 features.
Around December 2008, Sony went public with the information that there is indeed a PSP 4000 in works that will replace the recently launched PSP 3000 version. The company has given definitive information that PSP 4000 would be a new hardware iteration of the current PSP line with more path breaking features would be incorporated in what may be dubbed as the PSP 2. PSP 2 will not be coming soon as per Eurogamer but it will bring in a number of new features.
As of now, PSP 4000 is expected in late 2009. Since this is a mere hardware revision not much is expected in the form of new features. PSP 4000 features would roughly be the same as the features of previous models. PSP 4000 features would be primarily based upon those introduced by the PSP Slim and Lite. It is expected to take the new seventh generation consoles a small step further.
The current news says that Sony might improve the WiFi functionality. The company has been reluctant in doing this for a long time, primarily citing intellectual property reasons. With increasing customer pressure, the company might just have to buckle down. The manner in which Nintendo DS uses WiFi is another factor that Sony might increase the ‘capabilities’ of WiFi in PSP 4000.
Another obvious improvement that is expected in the new version is the fixing of LCD problems introduced by the PSP 3000. Sony had to take a lot of heat when it was found that the 3000 version of PSP is showing a number of interlacing artifacts in its display. While the reason behind the problem remains unknown, the company still continues to stand by the earlier comment that the artifacts are a ‘feature’ inherent in the product because of improved response times.
Since PSP 4000 is a hardware iteration, another change that can be expected though not exactly qualifies as new among the PSP 4000 features is the increase in processor clock speed and RAM. PSP still comes with an ancient 333 Mhz clocked processor and even though the RAM of the console was increased to 64 MB in the last upgrade, the company would surely go in for a memory upgrade so that games perform better.
PSP 4000 features would also list significant changes to the XMB interface. At the time of its launch, the interface was really good but changes to it have been more of evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Again, nothing revolutionary might be expected but a number of evolutionary changes in the XMB interface is surely among the list of Sony for the PSP 4000 features.
Summary
With competition on its heels, Sony PSP needs a number of changes. PSP 4000 features would be done so as to bridge the gap between where the PSP stands now and where the company’s rival products like Nintendo DS stand. Expected PSP 4000 features include improved WiFi, better LCD and more powerful hardware.
